An SPF is not a property of a brand. It is a property of the batch, the formula as it was actually mixed, filled and sealed on one particular day. So we tie the number to a batch code, and we test again rather than testing once.

Tested on skin, not on a plate
In-vivo testing measures the dose of UV needed to redden protected skin against unprotected skin, on human volunteers. It is slower and dearer than the in-vitro alternative, and it is the method the Indian standard adopts.

At the density the number assumes
Every SPF claim is made at 2 mg of product per square centimetre of skin. A report that does not state its application density has not told you what its number means.

UVA measured separately
SPF describes UVB only. UVA protection is a different test with a different standard, and it is what the PA rating reports. A pack that quotes one and stays quiet about the other has answered half the question.

Tied to a batch code, not to a brand
A result belongs to the production run that was tested. Formulations get remade. A claim true for one run is not automatically true for the next. Every tube carries the code that matches its own report.

Signed, dated and named
The document should be the laboratory's own, carrying its name, its accreditation, the test date and the method. A screenshot of a number is not a report.

Published either way
A result we do not like goes up too. A brand that only publishes its good batches has built a marketing page, not a proof page, and you would have no way of telling the difference.

In vivo means the test was run on human skin under controlled UV exposure, to ISO 24444, the method the Indian standard IS 17494:2025 adopts. In vitro testing is run on a plate rather than a person. It is faster and cheaper and it is what most published sunscreen comparisons use.
All SPF testing assumes an application density of 2 mg per square centimetre, roughly two finger-lengths for a face and neck, and considerably more than most people apply. A correctly tested SPF 50 protects like an SPF 50 only if you use that much.
